Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Coder
Today, I stumbled upon an animated series "Think Like A Coder". This 10-episode ted-talk drama follows a girl named Ethic, and her robot companion, Hedge, as they attempt to save the world. The two embark on a dangerous quest. They overcome each obstacle using a series of computer programming fundamentals to find three precious stones such as: Node of Power, Node of Creation, & Node of Memory.
The first 6-minute episode introduced the viewer to loops by encouraging a thought process of how to break the girl out of prison. Once freed, they fly over to a Walking Dead like settlement on the outskirts of town where they need to find a resistance leader using a set of conditional statements.
After finding the resistance leader using loops & conditionals, they learn that the first stone is on a windowless train that they try to retrieve at night. This is where Ethic sees her first flashback into the past that she was very influential to the making of the stones. However, the robots took over the world, locked her up & gave her amnesia so she could not stop their plans to take over.
This series was HIGHLY entertaining, and I was surprised that the discussed concepts applied to my skills & development. I found that the pace of the information presented was spot on, and could be an excellent piece to introduce into the classroom for young K-12 student programmers. The material presented variables, loops, conditional statements, recursion, palindromes, algorithms ... etc.
The videos also allow the viewer to pause if they would like to think of a solution before one is presented. As of this writing, the last two episodes haven't yet been released so I'm eager to see what happens next. So, if you are a programming student like myself, you definitely would want to check this out.
